THE SURFING CAPITAL OF THE PHILIPPINES
Baler, Aurora, is known as the surfing destination of the Philippines, but there is more things to do and visit in Baler because of its rich history.
On our first day, we went to Doña Aragon Ancestral House, (Doña Aragon commonly known as Aurora Antonia Aragon Quezon was the wife of Philippine President Manuel Luis Quezón and the First Lady of the Philippines from 1935 to 1944). A museum containing old local costumes, beautiful paintings, photo albums, old books and the Presidential Car “Chrysler Airflow Limousine” of Manuel L Quezon. We had experienced and learned a lot about Philippine history already, and our day was not yet over. We had the chance to visit the Museo De Baler, a few steps away from Doña Aragon’s House located at Quezon Park of Baler; inside the Museum you will see many historical facts that link it closely to the Philippines first and longest colonizer, Spain and it contained pieces that are significant to the Baler’s history.
A part of history much closer to the local’s heart in Baler, Aurora
After a rich Philippine History tour, we proceeded to Ermita Hill, located at Brgy. Zabali, which covers an area of about 2 hectares. The place is very close to the hear of the town’s folk because it became a place of rescue and refuge when a great storm that came less than a century ago. When a huge wave that landed in the area which the locals called “Tromba Marina”, they swam towards the Ermita Hill. This all happened in December 27, 1735. Today, you can walk through the 200+ steps going to the white cross of the Emrita Hill and see the beautiful landscape of Sabang Beach.
A Tree that stood through time
During our visit, we were able to chance upon the Millennium Tree, also known as the “Balete Tree”, located in Brgy Quirino, Ma. Aurora, which is perhaps the largest and oldest Balete tree in Asia. It is estimated to be 600+ years old and is recognized by international scientists and media.
There are many fantastic beaches in Baler, including awe inspiring islands like “Lukso Lukso islets” which that comprise of amazing rock formations of which, one of them are connected to the mainland. Another feature of Baler is the Ditumabo Falls which have crystal clear waters coming from the top of the mountain.
