For dinner, everyone’s invited to head to San Juan by the Bay Floating Restaurant (Santa Rita, Samar; about 40 min / 14km), just across San Juanico Bridge. San Juan by the Bay offers a spectacular view of the country’s longest bridge as it criss-crosses through the San Juanico Strait.

Guests will take a floating cottage pulled by boats going to the floating restaurant. Aside from the San Juan Bridge, guests can also watch sunset over the hilly areas of Leyte.

Tikog Weaving in Saob Cave

Guests will head to Barangay Basiao in Basey, Samar, to watch women weave tikog into Samar’s famous banig and other handicrafts. These weavers work inside Saob Cave, because of the cool temperature. Saob Cave is about an hour away from Tacloban (26km).

Below, a weaver pounds dried tikog strands until flattened. The process is called “paglagot.” Paglagot helps it make easier to weave the tikog. According to the weavers, it takes about a week to make a banig mat, from harvesting and drying to the actual weaving.

From Saob Cave, we will continue our way to Basey’s natural gem – the Sohoton Natural Bridge National Park. For the tour, guests can choose between renting a motorboat (good for 5 people) or taking a river cruise (banca, good for 15 people). From the river, guests will enter the Sohoton Cave, where one can explore the karst formations inside the system. At the end of the cave, kayaks will be on hand for paddling towards the Sohoton Natural Bridge.

After an adventurous afternoon in Sohoton, guests head back to Tacloban for a quick nap before dinner. In Tacloban, Locals suggest trying OCHO SEAFOOD AND GRILL, a modern paluto- style restaurant similar to those found in Cebu. Ocho’s bestsellers are baked scallops are fish skin chicharon (Dinner cost excluded from package).

OPTIONAL: KTV / Sing-along

For that sing-along itch, ALKFI recommends WHERE ELSE RESTOBAR & KTV, located at Second Floor YPL Building, P. Burgos Street, Tacloban City. Where Else offers private rooms for a perfect bonding experience with friends (KTV excluded from package).

Guests can buy their pasalubong in downtown Tacloban, where stores line up a section of P Zamora Street. Pasalubong staples in Tacloban include BINAGOL (a steamed mix of talyan root crop, coconut milk and sugar), chocolate MORON (your favourite suman flavoured with cocoa), and SAGMANI (made of cassava, gabi or sweet potatoes and mixed with coconut cream, sugar and coconut meat).

These pasalubong stores also offer other local delicacies such as carabao’s milk pastillas and a variety of vacuum-sealed chips – from tahong to cassava.

Dulag, Leyte

On the third day, we’ll head to Dulag, Leyte, catch some waves at the Sabang Daguitan Surf Camp. Our friends from Dulag also prepare a lunch treat before getting back to Tacloban, in time for our flight back to Manila. Sabang Daguitan is about 1.5 hours from Tacloban (40 km).

A few meters from Sabang Daguitan Surf Camp is the tranquil Da-O Balay Kawilan. One can have a quiet moment with nature in one of the Da-O’s floating cottages or take a relaxing massage (massage services excluded from package).
